I always stress how important the core is. A weak core leaves you more susceptible to poor posture, lower back pain and injuries . Strengthening it will help prevent this and also help improve your balance. A strong flexible core underpins almost everything you do day to day I.e putting on shoes, lifting , housework, sports, gardening .the list goes on. Remember core and ab work are different. Overtraining abs and under training the core can set you up for injuries. If washboard abs is what you are after its essential to drop body fat through a calorie defect while strengthening the abdominals through frequent core work.
