Have not been exercising? Don’t pay anything for training with a fitness trainer.

Many fitness professionals are in the industry because of their passion for fitness. While some are motivated by monetary rewards, there are others out there who are driven by their desire to help as many people as possible improve their health.

We want to help many people.

Being fitness teachers (guru, in our context, is teacher), we have been helping many people learn fitness since 1993. This year, my team from Team Fitness Guru and I would like to emphasize on devoting our efforts in helping as many people as possible as priority one. We want to touch as many lives as possible. That is our vision. We want to help as many people as we can and we will make that our mission.

Money as a barrier to entry.

One of the barriers to starting a fitness program is money. To engage a true professional personal trainer to facilitate your training, it’ll cost more than $80 an hour. Even going to the public gym without proper gym instruction would cost you some money. For my team, clients pay an average of $158 per session, depending on the programme that they’re on. Yes, we’re the AUDI and BMW of fitness – our clients get value and results for the investment they make.

So I was thinking, how can we help others when the barrier is there, without lowering quality of training? After thinking through long and hard, we came to a conclusion. Give free quality training to everyone, and lower rates for those who are serious in training.

My Get Fit! Fitness Bootcamp (www.Fitnessbootcamp.sg) programme has trained more than 5000 people since 2008, and we usually ask for a discounted fee for service of $30 per session (usual $50). This year, we’ll reduce the cost for potential clients of $30 to $0 for their first session. There will be no hard selling.

Free training. No barrier to start exercising.

Free training for everyone by TFG personal trainers. In this valuable session, anyone who attend will learn at least 20 great, effective and fat burning exercises that they can take home and duplicate as their own workout, which we strongly encourage. In return, we would like to ask clients to pay it forward by asking others to come join our training session for free so they too can benefit from physical activity. There is no need to pay any cash.

Why only one session free? That’s all we can afford at this time. You see, we have a lot of clients who are paying clients / regulars to our bootcamps. Unlike many other bootcamp companies, I want a tight trainer-to-participant ratio (about 1:8) so that clients get value from their workout as the trainers will be able to guide, instruct and correct their form. On top of this, provide great motivation. Our clients return because of the value that they receive from us trainers. To give more than one session free will loosen this ratio and would deviate from our team’s principles. On top of that, it’ll also deprive other people from joining us to start their fitness journey. For those who intend to continue, they are free to do so by either taking up a package or pay single sessions. This will allow us to devote more resources to getting more trainers in to maintain our ratio of 1:8 and ensuring quality of training would be high.

Reduced Rates for Personal Training.

For those who prefer personal training (PT), we will be lowering our rates from and average of $158 per session to $78 (Starting from) for the first 10 sessions. Clients will still get their $158 value (a) Professional instruction (b) Non-intimidating, great and fun training. On top of this, they get (1) 2 Customized workout programme that they can do on their own, (2) 1 Fitness Assessment (3) Nutritional Advice. AUDI quality at Toyota rates For those who want me to personally train you – it’s now $98 per session (Usual $218) for my Kickstart Programme (2 sessions). Kindly email me for details.

Why no free session for PT? As much as we want to, we’re already stretched. We have bills to pay, and mothers and fathers to take care of, and those occasional fines that we need to settle We’re taking half of what we usually earn so that more people can afford and benefit from our expertise. All our training sessions come with money back satisfaction guarantee – if you’re not satisfied, that session is considered free

We’re on the right track to helping more people! Go Team!

Okay here’s a quick report for the first 2 weeks of 2012.

We’ve been blessed with great partnership with the Health Promotion Board for the past 4 years – to be the ones who first created the Physical Activity Programme for Lose To Win. In the first year, we had more than 270 participants. For Lose To Win 2, there were about 1000 of them. Now, in our third year – we’re already working on improving the fitness for more than 400 people for group A. We’re expecting 300 more for Group B, who will start training mid April. Yes, we’re in the second week of Lose To Win now!

For bootcamps and personal training signups and enquiries – drastic increases in both.

Side note to all my TFG trainers who are reading this: You guys are doing a great thing helping many others lose weight and get fitter. May God bless you. To my admin and outreach team (Coach Lisa, Amirah and Dilys): Thanks for the behind the scenes support, you’re the fire in the furnace that keeps the team going. To my right hand (wo)man, chief trainer and general manager: Coach Zhywee – Thanks for being my co-captain. You complete the team by guiding our trainers to deliver their best and giving the best to our clients. We see you grow so much as our GM (ehem, with the bulk of it involving planning and instructions behind the PC). Without you, TFG would only be FG.

I love you guys – let’s keep it strong!

To our clients, thank you for your continued support and putting food on our table. We strive to give our best to you.

To those who are sedentary – we look forward to being with you for our group workouts (www.fitnessbootcamp.sg).

Are you from another bootcamp or gym? Hey come join us for a session – a change training style and exercise prescription will do you good

To everyone reading this – I thank you for your patience – if you know anyone who needs to start a Healthy Lifestyle, do let them know about our free workout that they can join. Do share this if you’re on facebook or twitter. Your assistance will go a long way.

I’m contactable at sharm@teamfitnessguru.com, feel free to email me if you have any queries I’ll personally direct you to one of my team members to assist you. Remember to add me on facebook.

I wish you all the best for 2012. May all your plans come true!

Just for fun: If you find this article interesting, please click on ‘Like’ and/or write a thing or two in the comments below ya?

Dear Friends,

In the fitness industry, it is constantly changing. Concepts regarding the different issues in fitness and sports science are dynamic as research produce new findings. People are taking new directions in training methodology and for some old school belief you had, some have been proven wrong and invalid. Here are a few false concepts you’d want to know:

Old concept No. 1: “Use a low intensity exercise for longer duration of time”

New concept: What matters during the exercise is your “total energy cost or calories burn during the exercise”. So the faster you walk, the more you’d lose. Beginners are advised to start building up their stamina in a progressive manner. They need to build up their stamina first and then go for as much as fast as you could.

Old concept No. 2: “I don’t need a personal trainer – I just need learn from a book and watch lots of youtube videos”

New concept: While you can always do the ‘Monkey see and monkey do’ method, it would be smarter for one to engage a professional trainer who is experienced and certified to facilitate your workouts. This ensures that you achieve your target effectively and efficiently, with minimal or no injury at all. Think about it, if you’re sick, would you rather see a doctor or just read from wikipedia.

Side track: I know a few ‘Youtube Trainers’ – you know, trainers who learn and pick up training exercises from watching youtube. Talking about ‘Monkey see, Monkey do’ – unless they are able to decipher the physiological and biomechanical aspects of the workouts, this would be doing injustice to their clients. Further, as many of these youtube videos are homemade (some great functional training workouts), there are many exercises that work on all planes at a time – sagittal, frontal and transverse. While this is all good and dandy, a trainer who does not have the proper qualifications may not have the proper knowledge for workout progression to vary and modify such complex and intense (selective) exercises.

Old concept No. 3: “Yoga is gentle and simple”

New concept: Yoga is a great exercise form. However, it has some unique postures and can be physically challenging. Start slow and get a qualified trainer to facilitate your workout.

Old concept No. 4: “You will always get results if you workout just like me”

New concept: Each individual has a unique genetic scripture. It is possible that if your friend can lose weight quickly by cycling, but not you. This is because our bodies react differently to different kinds of exercise. Consult your trainer if you are not getting any results. Some personal trainers use one template and training program across the board with their clients – if you’re a victim of this, ask your trainer why your program is not personalised.

Old concept No.5: “I’ll get a trainer who can lift heavier, run faster and much stronger than me. That’ll ensure that I’ll be like him”

New concept: Get a professional personal trainer who knows how to coach. I know many trainers who have 4% bodyfat and can bench 150kg easily but are bad trainers. It’s sad to see that a lot of their clients’ funds go towards someone who claims to be a coach but in fact is just an athlete. Just look around when you’re in a gym – how many clients actually look as buffed and lean as their trainers. I’d suggest you look for one with proper certifications (a full time diploma, degree and masters degree is preferred) that not only cover fitness certifications, but also coaching and pedagogy certificates.

Sidetrack: When I was 26, I had to learn how to perform the backflip. Some of my classmates and I did it after 6 sessions of training , thanks to my coach. The great thing is, he didn’t and could not even do even one flip (back/front/side) at all. He did this by facilitating and teaching the proper progression and extension of the parts that creates a beautiful backflip. Now that’s a great teacher!

Old concept No. 6: “Stay away from strength training if you want to lose weight”

New concept: Again the concept goes beyond the fact. Researchers have shown that both cardio, endurance and strength training go hand in hand in weight loss. With a higher percentage of muscle, it’ll help increase metabolism which in turn helps to burn fat faster.

Old concept No. 7: “Water fitness programs are only for the aged or injured”

New concept: New research has found that water fitness programs can benefit anyone. Even professional athletes include water fitness programs in their training program.

Old concept No. 8: “Exercise only improves the body figure”

New concept: Exercise does not only do justice to your body but they are a great help in keeping you away from depression and tension. It is a true source of mind and body fitness.

Old concept No. 9: “People with extra weight are unlikely to get benefit from exercise”

New concept: The most important factor of leading a healthy life is to remain active. Even food obsessed people who exercise daily are less prone to early death than those who are sedentary. Health benefits can be reaped with just a little bit more physical activity in your life.

Old concept No. 10: “Join a Gym and you’ll be fit”

New concept: Joining a gym is not the only solution for your fitness program. Many people buy a year’s membership but stop going to the gym after a month! Unless you workout consistently, you will not be fit. Studies have shown that you can home based fitness programme usually results in a higher adherence level. Be consistent in your mission of fat and weight loss and you’ll see results in no time!

Old concept No. 11: “Do the same type of exercise regularly and a lot, or don’t do it”

New concept: It is always better to exercise a little that abandoning it completely. You must remember that “something is better than nothing”. So keep it up with any of its form but do it! In fact, you can even do interval training of 10 minutes at moderate intensity and see health benefits at the end of the day. Aim to clock 150-250 minutes in a week. See ACSM’s stand on physical activity and weight loss here

Old concept No.12: “Just exercise”

New concept: Exercise is not the only factor that is going to help in fat and weight loss. There are other factors like your genetics, diet, and routine. If you workout but continue to have a large food intake, how would you lose the fat from your waistline then? Keep the other factors in mind. Always remember less calorie intake.

Old concept No.13: ‘I stretch before my workout and run to lessen chances of injury’

New concept: Email me for the reason why stretching before exercise does not prevent injuries and in fact it reduces your performance during workouts.

Well there you have it – some concepts that are outdated and highlighted to your attention. If you wish to have a trainer to share with you in what I shared greater depth, do feel free to email me at sharm@teamfitnessguru.com and I’ll try to get back to you soonest.

In the meantime, take care and train smart!

I’m sure you know too right? Yeap you’re right – have a negative caloric intake (Eat less, exercise more). Many of us know this but not many have the ability to apply that simple equation (but can be difficult at times) in their pursuit to lose weight. This is where my team and I usually remind them that losing weight goes beyond exercising and eating within limits.

Also, have you ever stopped to seriously ponder why so many people know how to lose weight but can’t seem to keep it off long term? You have likely gone through various diets and workout routines yourself only to fall back into old habits. It is often not an issue of having poor will power or being weak, but a simple determination of whether you are mentally ready for the change that weight loss brings to your life.

If you have never given your mental preparedness any consideration, then you are not alone. Most people who want to shed some excess weight think solely in terms of goal weights, measurements, dieting practices, and exercise routines.

All of those things are essential to losing weight, but if you want to keep it off long term then you really must make it a mental process as well.

Extrinsic Motivation

The first question to ask yourself is whether you are doing this just to look better for a specific date coming up, or if there are deeper motivations. This is important because your primary goals for the weight loss can determine how long you mentally keep up the healthier habits.

For example, consider someone planning a beach vacation in a couple months. They may be really motivated by the knowledge they will have to shed the blue jeans and put on a bathing suit in public, but once that vacation is over they are likely to fall right back into old habits and find themselves once again pinching their saddlebags with disappointment.

Intrinsic Motivation

If on the other hand you can motivate yourself to get healthy for deeper reasons you will be more mentally prepared to take the weight off and actually keep it off. If you just can’t get motivated by the health risks of being overweight, consider other things. Maybe you want to live a long, healthy life as a role model to your children or you are sick and tired of being the “fat mom” on the block.

Everyone has their own personal motivation and once you tap into yours it will be easier to follow a healthier lifestyle for good.

Some basic but interesting intrinsic motivation theories are such from Bandura (1997), who defines self-efficacy as one’s belief in one’s ability to succeed in specific situations. Deci and Ryan’s cognitive evaluation theory (1991) (aka self-determination theory – focuses on the degree to which an individual’s behavior is self-motivated and self-determined) is worth reading up too.

Positive Dieting

Another aspect of getting mentally prepared is to put what you are doing in a positive light. If you go into a diet thinking it is going to be total deprivation and you are never going to taste your favorite foods again you are not likely to stick with it long term.

Moderation Please

Sticking with a healthier lifestyle long term requires moderation, not deprivation. If you want to succeed, give yourself occasional treats that you enjoy but keep them in the “occasional” category. Don’t think of it as going on a diet or torturing yourself in the gym. Just think of it as a healthier lifestyle that you want to adopt.

Positive attitude

It is much easier to lose weight if you have a positive attitude and some serious mental motivation beyond a day at the beach or a wedding. Design a program that you can live with for the rest of your life and that doesn’t feel like torture. Then seriously ask yourself: am I really ready to do this once and for all?

It’s been quite awhile since I updated this website – been busy with personal training, corporate fitness planning and conducting lectures/workshops. I just came back to learn more about fitness in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney and will attempt to start writing again.

Since I first started this website in 1993, I’ve been receiving many emails and enquiries from different people – the general population who want to lose weight and get fit, companies, those who are interested in taking up a personal trainer, fellow trainers who like to discuss on training matters and even junior trainers who keeps emailing me for advise. I feel so honoured

I thought, since I’m sharing what I know with them, why not share it with everyone else . And then there’s the other issue of time – I strive to find 10 minutes a day for this blog. As it will be for many different target audiences, I’ll try my best to keep it in layman terms as much as possible and in a conversational manner. I intend to share, not as an expert but as a friend who wants to see you attain your goals quickly.

What will i blog about?

Let’s see…

It’ll be about my thoughts on fitness, life, play and wellness.

Personal Training excellence

Fitness and non-fitness issues/stories

Reviews on interesting journal articles that I’ve read

Reviews on fitness from various sources – youtube, twitter, etc.

Scientific approach to fitness training (effective and efficient ways to achieve your goals)

Nutritional guidance for all, that is easily adhered too (don’t expect crazy diet advice here)

Advice for trainers who want to improve themselves (only like minded professionals please)

I’d like to share fitness workouts with the companies that I work with, and my pursuit to improve productivity at workplaces

Healthy aging – let’s look and feel great at 65!

Any other things that I find interesting.

There’s so much to write about fitness and being a personal trainer in Singapore coming to 20 years helps

In the meantime, do email me at sharm@teamfitnessguru.com if you have any suggestions or questions ya?

Tis I, your humble trainer at your service.

We can improve our health and quality of life by including moderate amounts of physical activity in our lives daily. Health benefits from physical activity are thus achievable for most of us, including those who may dislike vigorous exercise and those who may have been previously discouraged by the difficulty of adhering to a program of vigorous exercise.

As science is dynamic, new discoveries in training methods and sports science are made everyday. It is my philosophy to constantly upgrade myself in this field as much as possible so that my clients can benefit from them.

Knowledge and knowing how to apply them (Exercise prescription) have helped many.

Please inform me if you would like me to help you achieve your fitness goals. Anyway, here’s the list of certifications that I’ve accumulated these past few years. And yes.. if you would like to take a physical look at these certificates, I’d be glad to show them to you.

A little about my experience in the Fitness Industry

I started giving my first few personal fitness training services first way back in 1993, helping friends and fellow sports mates with their training, diet and nutrition. I’ve invested hundreds of hours upgrading myself and attending courses & seminars on health/fitness – both here in Singapore and overseas.

In 1996, I started coaching and teaching as a relief Physical Education teacher at a local Junior College with the Ministry of Education.

During National Service, I was commissioned by the then President of the Republic of Singapore as a Lieutenant. Shortly after that, I became the Officer Commanding (OC) for one of the units at SAFI MI. Back then I was also overseeing the physical training programs of the 400+ men under my charge.

Right after I completed my national service obligations, I was approached by one of my friends from Ray Wilson’s California Fitness Centers to join them as a Personal Trainer. So I did. The idea of being part of one of the biggest and most successful fitness centres in Singapore (back then) was just exciting – I wanted to work and help with as many types of clients.

As the demand for my services increased – individuals that were not members of the fitness center also became interested in having me to help them achieve their fitness goals. Majority of them prefer to have their workouts at their own private gyms and homes. Most of these people are expat businessmen from the USA, Germany and Europe and CEOs of companies who have very little time to commute to the fitness centres. But of course I even have locals/heartlanders who were interested to engage me as their trainer. I made a decision and decided to go on my own.

In the National University of Singapore, I was given the responsibility to assist the President of the varsity’s Health and Fitness Club as his right hand man. Being the vice-president was quite a challenging task for me as I had very little time in juggling studies, working as a financial/property consultant and personal training. Things worked out very well though We had a few major events but the one that stood out most, to me, was the annual Muscle and Fitness war, which a well known ‘national’ event in Singapore.

That was 2000.

Time have passed and with the expanded clientele – I now lead a group of 20 personal and fitness trainers doing huge projects such as being the Fitness Partner of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign 2009, appearing on Channelnewsasia’s Vanity documentaty and so on. Things are definitely getting more interesting now
